English Test Requirements for the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand Visa Changed (September 2025)

English Test Requirements for the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand Visa Changed (September 2025)

From 13 September 2025, the Department of Home Affairs has introduced new rules for the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa. These reforms update the list of approved English language tests, adjust minimum score requirements, and allow new retake options.

If you are planning to apply for a Subclass 482 visa in Australia, it’s essential to understand the new English language requirements before lodging your application.

When Did the New Rules Start?

The new English test requirements apply to 482 visa applications lodged on or after 13 September 2025 under LIN 25/082.

  • If your English test was completed before 13 September 2025, the old rules still apply.
  • If your test was taken on or after 13 September 2025, you must meet the new requirements.

What Changed in 2025?

  1. Expanded List of Approved Tests

In addition to IELTS, PTE, TOEFL iBT, OET, and Cambridge C1 Advanced, applicants can now use results from:

    • CELPIP General
    • LanguageCert Academic
    • Michigan English Test (MET)
  1. Updated Test Terminology
    • Cambridge CAE is now referred to as C1 Advanced.
    • IELTS now includes both General Training and Academic formats.
  1. One Skill Retake (OSR) Introduced

For tests taken on or after 13 September 2025, applicants may:

    • Re-sit a single skill (e.g. only Reading or Speaking).
    • Use IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) or MET Single Section Retake (SSR).

Important: This does not apply to tests taken before 13 September 2025.

Minimum English Test Scores for the 482 Visa (2025)

To satisfy the English requirement, you must meet the minimum score in each skill. There is no overall band requirement.

Test Listening Reading Writing Speaking
IELTS (Academic or General) 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0
TOEFL iBT 8 8 9 14
PTE Academic 33 36 29 24
OET 220 240 200 270
Cambridge C1 Advanced N/A N/A N/A N/A
CELPIP General 5 5 5 5

Michigan English Test (MET) 49 47 45 38

Note: Only tests taken at secure test centres are accepted. Remote or online versions (such as IELTS Online, OET@Home, or MET Digital) cannot be used for visa applications.

How Long Are English Test Results Valid?

  • Test results are valid for three years from the date of the test.
  • If you use a One Skill Retake, the validity is based on the original test date, not the retake date.
  • Your visa application must be lodged while your results are still valid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use IELTS Online or MET Digital for my 482 visa?
No. Only in-person tests at approved centres are accepted.

Can I combine scores from different test attempts?
You cannot combine different tests. However, if you are eligible for the One Skill Retake (tests taken on or after 13 September 2025), you may re-sit a single section.

Do I need an overall English score?
No. You only need to meet the minimum score in each skill.

Why These Changes Matter

The Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa English requirements are strict. Using the wrong test type, relying on outdated results, or misunderstanding the new retake rules could result in your application being delayed or refused.

The expanded list of approved tests and the introduction of the One Skill Retake make the process more flexible. However, compliance is crucial — small mistakes can have big consequences.
