Apply for a Parent Visa Australia

Bring your Parents to Australia, with a Parent Visa. Learn what you need to know about eligibility criteria and requirements.

The Parent Visa Australia program exists to facilitate the immigration of parents to Australia. Eligibility criteria include the sponsoring child being an Australian citizen or permanent resident with at least two years of residency. Exceptions may apply under special circumstances.

For parents to be eligible for, and granted, the Australian Parent Visa, the following criteria must be met:

  • Half of your children are citizens of Australia or permanent residents. They can also be eligible New Zealand citizens who reside in Australia.
  • A majority of your children are residents of Australia, than in any other country.

When applying for this Australian visa, you may include your partner and other qualifying dependents, provided they meet the necessary legal criteria.

The Parent Visa is temporary and is valid for two years from the date granted. It is important to note that steps can be taken to apply for a permanent Parent Visa (Subclass 103).

How it works

Learn how to bring your parent to Australia through the Parent Visa Australia program, whether for temporary or permanent residence. Sponsors must provide written evidence of their ability to support, house, and assist the parent. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate their children’s eligibility to sponsor and complete the application process with all required documents. While the temporary visa is valid for two years, parents are not obligated to stay the entire duration if pursuing permanent residency isn’t their goal.

The Parent Visa allows you to:
  • Move to or stay in Australia as a permanent resident
  • Sponsor eligible family members to come to Australia
  • Apply for Australian citizenship if eligible
  • Potentially be entitled to Medicare, which is Australia’s Government health system
  • Fewer restrictions on work rights

General Requirements

Australia offers several types of parent visas under its Family Stream migration program. The main types of parent visas available in Australia include:

  • Subclass 103 (Parent Visa): This visa is for parents who are outside Australia and wish to migrate to Australia to join their children who are Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens. It is a permanent visa.
  • Subclass 143 (Contributory Parent (Migrant) Visa): This visa is the permanent stage of the Contributory Parent visa pathway. It allows parents to live in Australia permanently.
  • Subclass 804 (Aged Parent Visa): This visa is for parents who are in Australia and wish to remain permanently with their children who are Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens. It is a permanent visa and is subject to specific age requirements.
  • Subclass 864 (Contributory Aged Parent (Residence) Visa): This visa is the permanent stage of the Contributory Aged Parent visa pathway. It allows aged parents to live in Australia permanently

To be eligible for these visas, parents must meet the balance of family test, which requires that at least half of their children live permanently in Australia or that more children live permanently in Australia than in any other single country.

Additionally, it’s important to note that applicants must meet health and character requirements and commit to an assurance of support (AoS) to ensure financial stability during their initial stay in Australia.

Temporary Parent Visa

The applicants who cannot meet the balance of family test can apply for a Subclass 870 visa.
The Subclass 870 visa allows parents to stay in Australia for a continuous period of up to 3 or 5 years per visa, depending on the visa holder’s choice. To apply for this visa, the parent must be sponsored by their child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. The sponsor must be approved by the Australian government before the parent can apply for the visa.
