Overview
Bring your Parents to Australia, with a Parent Visa. Learn what you need to know about eligibility criteria and requirements.
The Parent Visa Australia program exists to facilitate the immigration of parents to Australia. Eligibility criteria include the sponsoring child being an Australian citizen or permanent resident with at least two years of residency. Exceptions may apply under special circumstances.
For parents to be eligible for, and granted, the Australian Parent Visa, the following criteria must be met:
- Half of your children are citizens of Australia or permanent residents. They can also be eligible New Zealand citizens who reside in Australia.
- A majority of your children are residents of Australia, than in any other country.
When applying for this Australian visa, you may include your partner and other qualifying dependents, provided they meet the necessary legal criteria.
Validity
The Parent Visa is temporary and is valid for two years from the date granted. It is important to note that steps can be taken to apply for a permanent Parent Visa (Subclass 103).
How it works
Learn how to bring your parent to Australia through the Parent Visa Australia program, whether for temporary or permanent residence. Sponsors must provide written evidence of their ability to support, house, and assist the parent. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate their children’s eligibility to sponsor and complete the application process with all required documents. While the temporary visa is valid for two years, parents are not obligated to stay the entire duration if pursuing permanent residency isn’t their goal.
The Parent Visa allows you to:
- Move to or stay in Australia as a permanent resident
- Sponsor eligible family members to come to Australia
- Apply for Australian citizenship if eligible
- Potentially be entitled to Medicare, which is Australia’s Government health system
- Fewer restrictions on work rights
