New 482 Skills in Demand (SID) Visa: A Must-Read Guide for Migrants and Employers

New 482 Skills in Demand (SID) Visa: A Must-Read Guide for Migrants and Employers

Australia’s skilled migration program has undergone a significant update with the introduction of the Skills in Demand (SID) visa (Subclass 482), replacing the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the SID visa, outlining its key features and benefits for both skilled migrants and employers.

What is the SID Visa?

The SID visa is a temporary visa designed to address critical skill shortages in the Australian workforce. It offers a streamlined pathway for skilled professionals to work and live in Australia for up to four years, with the potential for permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS).

Key Features of the SID Visa

Three Streams: The SID visa is divided into three streams:

  1. Specialist Skills Stream: Caters to highly skilled migrants earning an annual income of AUD $135,000 or more in specific sectors.
  2. Core Skills Stream: Open to applicants with relevant work experience and an annual income exceeding AUD $73,150 in occupations listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
  3. Labour Agreement Stream: Facilitates the movement of skilled workers under bespoke agreements between employers and the government.

Reduced Work Experience Requirement: Applicants now need only one year of relevant work experience in the past five years, compared to the previous two-year requirement under the TSS visa.

Enhanced Mobility: Visa holders can change employers with greater flexibility and have up to total of 365 days during the validity of your 482 visa period or 180 days in a single period, to find a new sponsor or apply for another visa.

Clearer Pathway to Permanent Residency: Time spent working under the SID visa counts towards the permanent residency requirements of the ENS visa.
