Free Services to Migrants
Eligible migrants, including those who have lived in Australia for many years, will now be able to access free English classes for as long as they need to achieve vocational English. Significant reforms to the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP), which start on 19 April 2021 remove the previous 510 hour limit on tuition.
Also, English language proficiency is a key determinant for positive social and economic outcomes for humanitarian migrants. Proficiency in English is highly important for gaining employment, income and hours worked. English language skills also play an important role in contributing to positive social outcomes. If you are a migrant, learning English is an important part of your settlement journey — it will help you gain confidence to participate more in everyday activities and build a better life and home in Australia.
Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)
The AMEP will give you an opportunity to study English up to a vocational level, an increase on the previous limit of functional English. It’s exciting news if you are looking for work, would like to study or if you want to pursue better employment or a career in your chosen profession.
You can choose to study face-to-face, in online and virtual classes, or by distance learning. A volunteer tutor scheme to support you is also available.
If you have under school-aged children, free childcare is available while you are participating in face-to-face AMEP classes.
There are a range of flexible study options. For instance, you can study full-time, part-time and on evenings and weekends. Other improvements have recently been made to the delivery of the AMEP to make it easier to access if you can’t attend a class in person.
A new AMEP Online website, providing online English lessons, is scheduled to go live on 19 April 2021. This a free resource, available to anyone wishing to improve their English skills. You don’t have to be enrolled in the AMEP to learn through the site and you can study whenever it suits you.
About the program
The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is a free service to help eligible migrants and humanitarian entrants with low English levels to improve their English language skills and settle into Australia.
Learning English will help you to participate more fully in Australian life. You will learn new skills to help you work and make friends in Australia.
When you are in an AMEP class, free childcare is available for children under school age.
Your service provider will assist you to find out about free childcare.
For migrants receiving Centrelink payments, learning English in the AMEP may meet some or all of your mutual obligation requirements.
Speak to an AMEP service provider to find out how to get involved, including access to free childcare, virtual tuition, tutors and connecting with other students in the course. You can learn English while meeting new people and having fun too!
To check your eligibility and to find a class near you, visit the AMEP website (www.homeaffairs.gov.au/amep).
Help promote the AMEP
Have a look at the AMEP Promotional Flyer (2MB PDF) and share it with family and friends who may also be eligible.
