Points, Sponsorship or State Nomination? Understanding the Different Roads to Australian PR

There is no single road to Australian permanent residency.

For skilled migrants, several pathways may be worth considering, including points-tested visas, state or territory nomination and employer sponsorship.

The challenge is understanding which pathway actually fits your circumstances.

  1. Points-tested migration

The SkillSelect system is used for several skilled visas, including:

  • Skilled Independent visa, subclass 189
  • Skilled Nominated visa, subclass 190
  • Skilled Work Regional Provisional visa, subclass 491

Applicants generally submit an Expression of Interest before they can receive an invitation to apply.

Points can be awarded for factors including age, skilled employment, qualifications and English language proficiency.

The current minimum points threshold is 65.

But there is an important distinction:

65 points is a threshold, not a guarantee of an invitation.

The number of invitations available and the competitiveness of particular occupations can affect outcomes.

  1. State or territory nomination

Subclass 190 and subclass 491 involve state or territory nomination.

This means applicants need to consider both the federal visa requirements and the relevant state’s or territory’s nomination criteria.

Each jurisdiction can establish its own requirements based on workforce and demographic needs.

That means an applicant who appears suitable for one state may not necessarily meet another state’s criteria.

If you are considering nomination, check the current requirements of the jurisdiction you are targeting.

  1. Employer sponsorship

Employer sponsorship takes a different approach.

Instead of relying solely on a points score or state nomination, the pathway involves an eligible employer sponsoring or nominating a skilled worker.

The Skills in Demand subclass 482 is a temporary sponsored visa, while the Employer Nomination Scheme subclass 186 is a permanent employer-sponsored visa for eligible applicants.

Regional employer sponsorship may also be relevant through subclass 494.

Employer-sponsored migration can therefore be worth considering for skilled workers who have a suitable employer and occupation.

So which pathway is best?

There is no universal answer.

Consider:

Your occupation: Is it eligible for the visa you are considering?

Your points: What is your current score and how competitive might your profile be?

Your employment: Do you have an employer that may be willing and able to sponsor you?

Your location: Are you willing to live and work regionally if a regional pathway is appropriate?

Your timeline: Do you need a temporary visa first, or are you already in a position to pursue a permanent pathway?

Your evidence: Can you substantiate your qualifications, employment and other claims?

Don’t build your strategy around one number

One of the biggest misconceptions in skilled migration is that migration planning can be reduced to a points calculator.

Points matter, but they are only one part of the picture.

Similarly, having an employer willing to sponsor you does not automatically mean you qualify for an employer-sponsored visa.

And being interested in a particular state does not mean you will automatically receive nomination.

Think in pathways, not shortcuts

The strongest migration strategy is usually the one that takes your whole situation into account.

Your occupation, experience, qualifications, English ability, employer, location and long-term goals should all form part of the conversation.

Australia’s skilled migration settings can also change. For example, skilled visa processing priorities are currently governed by Ministerial Direction 119, which took effect on 25 July 2026.
