Professor Elaine Fox – Education and research
From Ireland
“Apart from the fantastic outdoor lifestyle, the ‘can do’ mindset and sense of innovation and possibility attracted me to Australia.”
Professor Elaine Fox is a cognitive psychologist who researches human emotions and the cognitive and genetic processes that act as protective factors to enhance human resilience. Most recently she was Professor of Psychology and Affective Science at Oxford University where she founded the Oxford Centre for Emotion and Affective Neuroscience (OCEAN). Professor Fox has been appointed Head of the School of Psychology at the University of Adelaide where she will provide academic, strategic, and operational leadership to the school and the faculty.
Professor Kevin Dutton – Education and research
From the United Kingdom
“The University of Adelaide reached out to me in early 2021. It was at the height of the pandemic in the UK and at a time when the hands of many people, myself included, were hovering over the reset button on their lives. The Zoom calls all went brilliantly and it was clear to everyone concerned that the move had a more than favourable chance of working out. So, after nearly a quarter of a century at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, I decided it was time for a fresh challenge, new horizons…and a modicum, at the very least, of a suntan.”
Professor Kevin Dutton is a research psychologist best known for his work in psychopathy. He is also an internationally renowned author of numerous books and articles and an elite performance consultant. Professor Dutton applies his scientific training and knowledge to engaging with the public on complex psychological concepts through his writing, making cutting edge insights accessible to a lay audience and revealing how they apply in everyday life. He has published books on the science and ethics of persuasion and social influence, the stigmatization of certain (perceived) mental health conditions, and the dynamics of prejudice, discrimination and polarization.
Professor Dutton has been appointed by the University of Adelaide as Australia’s first Professor for the Public Understanding of Psychology. There he will continue his work to increase the profile of psychological research in public forums, highlighting its significance and implications not just for the individual but for Australian culture and society as a whole. Professor Dutton was previously a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford’s Department of Experimental Psychology, and a member of the Oxford Centre for Emotions and Affective Neuroscience (OCEAN) research group.
