2020-2021 Occupational Ceilings for Subclass 189 & 491 visas

2020-2021 Occupational Ceilings for Subclass 189 & 491 visas

2020-2021 Occupational Ceilings for Subclass 189 & 491 visas

Unlike the Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) visa which requires a nomination by the State, the Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) does not require the sponsorship of a State or family member to secure permanent residency in Australia.

The subclass 189 visa is available to skilled workers with an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list, have a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for the occupation and have been invited to apply for the visa based on the number of points scored against a variety of factors used by the Department.

The criteria for the 189 visa differs for New Zealand citizens who must provide evidence such as length of residency in Australia, taxable income for the five financial years immediately preceding the application and visa currently held.

What are Occupational Ceilings?

Occupational ceilings are only applicable to invitations issued for 189 visas or subclass 491 visas under the family sponsored stream. Occupation ceilings are based on data provided by the Australia Bureau of Statistics relating to employment figures for each profession and ensure an appropriate distribution of invitations each year per occupation.

Do I need an EOI for 189 & 491 Visa?

Once a particular occupation has reached its quota for the program year, the Department will not issue any further invitations for applicants under that specific occupation. This means that applicants wishing to submit an EOI for that particular occupation would need to wait until the occupational ceiling figures for the next programme year are released. The occupation ceiling essentially places a limit on the number of Expression of Interests (EOIs) that can be selected for subclass 189 and subclass 491 family sponsored visas for each occupation and prevents a small number of occupations from dominating the skilled migration programme.

Note – Occupations with the asterix (*) mark simply means that they are subject to a pro-rate arrangement. For Accountants with occupation ID – 2211, the occupational ceiling also reflects volumes in other skilled visa categories.

Remember, occupation ceilings do not apply to State or Territory Nominated, Employer Sponsored or Business Innovation and Investment visas and only concern applicants lodging an EOI for a subclass 189 or a subclass 491 visa in the family sponsored stream.
