Celebrating Australia’s Newest Citizens: A Heartwarming Australia Day Tradition

This Australia Day, over 20,600 individuals from more than 150 nations took the significant step of becoming Australian citizens. Across the country, more than 380 citizenship ceremonies were held, marking a heartfelt moment of connection and commitment to Australia’s shared values.

In Canberra, the National Citizenship and Flag Raising Ceremony took place at Rond Terrace on 26 January. Televised live on ABC, the event featured the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, Prime Minister of Australia, presiding over the ceremony. The Governor-General, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, led the Australian Citizenship Affirmation, reaffirming the importance of inclusion, respect, and unity.

Since 1949, over 6 million people have become Australian citizens, contributing to the rich diversity that defines the nation today. Citizenship ceremonies are not only a celebration of those who pledge their allegiance to Australia but also a reminder of the shared values—respect, equality, freedom, and compassion—that unite us all.

Australians are encouraged to participate in active citizenship by engaging in their local communities, promoting inclusion, and supporting one another. These everyday acts strengthen the bonds that make communities vibrant and resilient.

The importance of active citizenship was also highlighted through the National Australia Day Council’s Australian of the Year Awards. The Local Hero category honours individuals who inspire positive change and encourage others to contribute to their communities. This year’s recipients remind us of the power of collective effort and the impact one person can have.
